Financial Aid

Financial Aid Opportunities

There are several types of financial aid available to graduate students at Boise State University. These types of aid are: scholarships, waiver of nonresident tuition, Perkins Loan, work study program, and guaranteed student loans. Graduate students are not eligible for Pell Grants or Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Federal financial aid is available by applying on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid obtained in the Financial Aid Office, Administration Building, Room 113, from a college Financial Aid Office or high school in your area or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Boise State University graduate students are classified as graduate, senior, or sophomore for purposes of receiving federal financial aid. This classification is determined from the application for admission submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office. Students pursuing an doctoral or master’s degree program are classified as graduate level students, students pursuing a second bachelor’s degree or teacher certification are classified as seniors, and students pursuing an associate degree or College of Technology program are classified as sophomores. All students pursuing a doctoral or master’s degree must be accepted into the program with Provisional or Regular status before they will be eligible to receive any federal financial aid. Students who are non-degree-seeking (enrolled in general graduate study or undergraduate courses of interest) are not eligible to receive financial aid. Graduate students with questions regarding their classification for financial aid purposes should contact the Graduate Admissions Office at (208) 426-3903.

Graduate students must follow the same procedures as undergraduate students to receive federal financial aid. They must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and submit it by March 1 to receive aid in time to pay fees for the next academic year. They are advised to apply as soon as the financial aid applications are available (usually in early January). The amount of financial aid that may be awarded depends upon financial need, total number of credits enrolled in each semester, and whether or not the student is classified as a graduate, senior, or sophomore.
