COMPUTER USAGE
A policy handed down from Governor Batt states that "online games, as well as visits to chat rooms, brokerage houses, fantasy football leagues or video strip shows, are off-limits" for state employees. According to an article in the Idaho Statesman, this is a "three-strikes policy, with the third offense as grounds for dismissal." State offices and employees are clearing their computers of extraneous software - games, screen savers, etc.
This is a good time for us to take inventory of our computers and their usage. Computer managers are not prepared to start managing your internet usage or come in and wipe off software from your computers, but remember you are doing state work on state equipment and you must think about the image you project to the public. If you make the decision to reconfigure your desktop or take off unneeded software, I am available to help so do not hesitate to call me at extension 3816 or e-mail me at rmcmill@bsu.idbsu.edu. POWER SUPPLIES An item that has come to my attention is the use of power strips as surge protectors. Please check your power supply and be sure you are using an effective surge protector. In these days of unpredictable power outages/surges/spikes, we must protect our expensive, sensitive electronic equipment. Here are a few facts that will help you choose the right surge protector for your situation. The greater the Joule dissipation capacity, the more effective and durable the surge protector. For greater surge protection, choose lower TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressing) ratings - 330 TVS provides the best possible protection. |
