Network Update
Welcome back to the College of SSPA and to the Fall 2001 semester. Our technology team has been busy getting our student labs in order for the semester and in getting computers ordered to the fourth year of our technology plan. Those computers are in now and I will be contacting faculty and staff slated for replacements to schedule a time that I might install the new computers.
If you know you are getting a new computer, please be sure your old computer has been readied by moving any documents to your network drives. If you have a lot of bookmarks in either Netscape or Internet Explorer, save those also to your network drive. The new computers are all Windows 98 operating systems, so please read the precaution notice below. If you have any questions, be sure to contact me at my new extension listed on the right.
REMINDER: I cannot repeat too many times, never install or uninstall software on your PC without contacting either me or Susan. Especially, never try reinstalling your operating system (Windows 95 or Windows 98) as this may cause corruption to your operating system that will force me to have to reformat the hard drive and install the software afresh. This will mean all your data and applications on that hard drive will be lost.
Windows 98 Users: One issue with Windows 98 is the shut-down problem that is consistent with that operating system. This is a known problem with Windows 98 and there are several probable causes and several proposed solutions - many of which will work for a short while, but do not permanently solve the problem. If your Win98 PC takes forever to shut down, just hold down the power button for 8-10 seconds until it turns off. This will not hurt the computer and a scan disk will probably occur upon the next start-up. I suspect that the probable culprit is our virus-scan software and I would rather you have problems shutting down your computer than have it become infected with a destructive virus that may render your computer useless.
If you need to contact either Susan or me, our phone numbers are listed at the right.

Welcome both new and returning faculty to the Fall 2001 semester. The College of SSPA has two computer labs available for students and instructional use. The labs are 100 percent funded by student fees. One lab is located in the PAAW building, room 125. This SPSS Lab has 28 workstations with Internet access, and the full MSOffice 2000 suite. All workstations print to a laser jet printer while one PC is available to burn CDs, scan pictures and print to a color laser jet. There is also a Smart Board available for instructional purposes. The second SSPA computer lab is located in the Communication building, room 114. This Digital Lab has 15 individual workstations all with Internet access and the full MSOffice 2000 suite. In addition, the PC’s have writeable CD Rom drives, zip drives, access to a laser jet printer, a color ink jet printer, scanner, and video conferencing capacity. Two digital cameras are available for checkout through the SSPA Tech office located in the PAAW Building, room 124.1. We also keep a supply of floppy disks available free of charge to students. We are planning to make zip disks available for sale by the end of the month in the SSPA Tech office. While I do recognize that students’ fees have already paid for the supplies used in each lab, I ask for you to encourage your students to be prudent in the amount of paper they printout. Open lab hours are posted at each site. If you wish to reserve either computer lab for instructional use, or have questions or requests, please contact Susan Emerson, SSPA Lab Coordinator at 426-3816, or via e-mail, semerson@boisestate.edu. |
