Network Refresher

The PRAXIS server is located in the Education Building.  It is accessible by the network to anyone who has a login name (i.e., JSmith,  JDoe,  etc) and logs on using a valid password. [However, it is not always the only server to which you are attached.]   The server is divided into three volumes:

  • the system (SYS) volume,
  • applications (APPS) volume,
  • and data (DATA) volume.

Your home directory (the "H" drive) is a subdirectory of the data volume directory HOME.  The common drive that is shared within the college (the "I" drive) is another subdirectory of the data volume, COMMON.  (The Queues directory is for your printer queues.)

One point that seems to confuse many of the PRAXIS users is the rights and privileges to files saved on the server - "who is able to access which files" and "can anyone else see my files?"   If you save documents to your home drive (the "H") you are the only one who has the rights and privileges to access those documents and no one else can see your directory.  However, if you are placing documents onto the common drive (the "I") the rights and privileges to that drive are not as secure, since this is a directory that is shared between all departments in the college.

The following is the login script that tells your computer which drives are which when you log onto the network:

MAP INS S1:=SYS:PUBLIC   (a search drive)
MAP ROOT I:=DATA:COMMON   (the common directory accessible to most people in the college)
MAP ROOT H:=DATA:HOME\%LOGIN_ NAME     (your home directory , accessible only by you)

The last point I want to make is that the data on our server is backup each night.  If your hard drive fails, which does happen occasionally, your documents are retrievable from a tape.  This process takes only a few minutes.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
