Bachelor of General Studies Program

Student Testimonials

As I entered the General Studies program I worked with my advisor and my colleagues in the introductory GS 200 course to come up with a plan of courses. When I was developing my plan it made sense to change my major to Communication instead. All of the courses I intended to take were going to be in the Communication department. I recognize without Boise State offering the General Studies program to begin with I would not have entertained the idea of returning to college.
If it wasn’t for the kindness and willingness of my advisor to answer numerous questions, and her encouragement I would not be standing here on the threshold of completing my college degree.                                                  Lisa Bowen

When I applied to the BGS program I talked about the long and winding path that led me here. Now, my path is straight and focused. At times it has been an uphill climb, yet worth the effort to now be able to see what’s on the other side. In some ways I feel like this curriculum has allowed me to make lemonade from lemons. And, it’s the best darn lemonade on the block! It quenched my thirst and gave me what I needed to move on to an open field of opportunity.

The BGS program is challenging, requires discipline and the ability to build a cohesive academic plan that will enhance one’s overall experience in scholarly pursuits.  Similar to an Oxford Degree, the BGS program opens up the study of a variety of subjects and disciplines providing a solid foundation to pursue higher learning in graduate level studies.

All of the personal and professional goals I set for my undergraduate degree in GS 200 were met and then some!  I had given up hope of ever returning to college at one point, but because of this program, I have gained the confidence and experience necessary for my future career goals, and will use my lifelong love of learning to help others along my journey.

I am pleased to be accepted into the Masters of Social Work program.  I would not be in this position had it not been for the BGS program and the encouragement, wisdom, guidance and patience of my advisor.  Research, study and preparation are always important, but to keep as diverse mix of students as are in the BGS degree funneled toward graduation take talent and my advisor has it in spades!  She deserves a great deal of credit in helping me complete my degree on the “42 year plan.”

I sometimes find myself reflecting on all of the new possibilities for myself because of a Bachelor’s degree. I would have to say that this is one of the best experiences that I have ever had, and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about school to go for it. It is worth it; again IT IS WORTH IT!!!

I have greatly enjoyed my experience in the General Studies program. It gave me good direction on finding out what I wanted to do with my life and found me great classes that BSU offered to accomplish my goals.

I like the BGS program because it provides flexibility to allow students the ability to design the courses they want to take in coordination with the BGS requirements to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Students can take advantage of past courses previously taken, spread out in many areas, and combine them to meet the BGS goals. They can select courses that fit their strengths and past experiences. The degree allows students a wider venue to meet individual time schedules and allows students to work at a pace that works for them.

When I first was accepted into the BGS degree program it was mainly to finish what I started so many years ago. As I have finished the course, finalized my Individual Degree Plan and have shown it to people, avenues have opened up for me that I never expected. For a future that was bright already, I cannot believe what things are going to be possible when this is finished.

The BGS program is perfect for me as a returning student working long hours at the bank. The ability to take courses in the evening and on the weekends works well with my schedule. The BGS 200 course is one of the best courses I have ever taken. It sets you on the path to success! With my degree plan and the wonderful support of my advisor, I will have my degree in no time!
