What is Lambda Alpha Epsilon (“LAE”)?
LAE is an organization open to all students interested in a career in criminal justice. This organization participates in regional and national conferences in which a variety of competitions are held. Such competitions include: written exams (criminal law and procedure, law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice and LAE knowledge), physical agility, firearms, and crime scene investigation.
What are the activities of LAE?
LAE’s desire is to cultivate a community of students interested in criminal justice at Boise State University. In doing this, the organization seeks to engage in three types of activities:
- academically-enriched activities
- civic engagement activities
- community development activities
- fundraising activities
Academically-enriched activities include, among other things, interesting and provocative speakers and/or hands-on activities. In 2009, we developed the “meet the. . .” speaker series. In 2009-2010, LAE invited the chair, Dr. Andrew Giacomazzi, and the former peer advisor, Mr. Jonathan Bolen, to speak to criminal justice majors about advising and criminal justice education in the “Meet the Advisor” event. We also had Dr. Bob Marsh and Investigator Vicki Gooch to speak with us about internships, career choice, and homicide investigations. Other events will include coffee talks with faculty and practitioners about their research and job-related experiences.
Civic engagement activities include any activities that benefit the larger community and provide opportunities for social awareness that relates to criminal justice and beyond. We have engaged in service projects with the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Service Saturdays, Victim’s Rights Week, and the like.
Community development activities include activities that solidify relationships within the student body. Although academically-enriched and civic engagement activities build relationships and a sense of unity, LAE will be intentional about bringing its student members together. Fun activities such as kickball, intramurals, barbeques, etc. will help build a community for LAE. A major tool that both builds a community and provides mentoring and exposure for future career connections is participation in regional and/or national conferences. See below for more details.
Finally, each year LAE participates in fundraising. It takes money to send students to conferences, fund activities, and the like. So, each year the students of LAE organize and participate in a TNT fireworks fundraiser at the end of June up to July 4. In order to raise enough funds and provide enough personnel, we ask each member works at least 8 hours at the stand. We will likely participate in more fundraising efforts as our student organization grows.
What are the benefits of LAE?
Membership in LAE offers opportunities for mentorship and leadership development, a community of students who are interested in the criminal justice field, and career connections in the region and across the United States.
What are the expectations of LAE members?
At the moment, we are going through a transition in determining “good standing.” At the moment, members are expected to work at least 8 hours at the fireworks stand (or, some reasonable substitution if the student was not able to work the stand) and to attend most of the activities (constitution and bylaws of the organization reads that the student is also to attend a monthly meeting. . .but we are transitioning away from business meetings. . . the activities replace these business meetings). Finally, each member is expected to keep the annual dues up to date. See below.
What are the membership dues?
membership is open to students who are interested in criminal justice. There is no GPA requirement. To join, students must pay an “initial due.” Returning student members must pay a “renewal due.” See below.
Initial Due: $36.00
Renewal Due: $30.00
For new members, please make checks out to “Boise State University” with “LAE” written in the memo line and drop it off to the criminal justice department.
