Master of Community and Regional Planning
Consistent with Boise-Nampa’s metropolitan character and Boise State’s emphasis on community engagement, the Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) focuses on the preparation of professional planners who are employable in local, state, and federal agencies as well as with consulting companies and developers.
The MCRP degree prepares individuals for careers in planning. The degree builds on the first planning program in the state – the Community and Regional Planning Graduate Certificate program at Boise State University. Evening and some day classes are offered for student convenience by 17 full-time faculty from disciplines of community and regional planning, civil engineering, construction management, dispute resolution, geography, geosciences, history, health sciences, and public administration. Courses in the planning program are also taught by distinguished local professionals who serve as adjunct faculty.
The MCRP meets multiple needs:
- Equips students with the fundamentals of planning and methods.
- Provides students with an understanding of the balance and interconnectedness of transportation, air quality, crime, housing, economic development, recreation, and other essential components of growth.
- Increases the capacity to perform research needed by local, county, state, and federal agencies.
- Provides local elected officials, current planners, and future planners with training opportunities to increase their effectiveness as planners.
- Increases the capacity of faculty members and graduate students to contribute to the formulation of public policy and to provide communities with a level of expertise in planning presently not available to them locally.
