Located in downtown Boise’s historic Alaska Building*, the Center on Main is a new multipurpose center for the teaching of social science and public affairs. As part of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs, it provides a downtown laboratory for the teaching of urban studies and infusing college expertise into the discussions about the needs and challenges facing Idaho and the region.
Through partnerships with local businesses and the City of Boise, the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs hopes to improve the block with street furniture, art and historic markers.
The storefront location includes a community radio station, a reading lounge with books and magazines about urban affairs and a city gallery featuring local photography and art, as well as a conference table, student work stations, a 40-student classroom, workstations for student interns and rooms for student clubs. Already host to SSPA classes, the center will serve as the base of operations for legislative, business and other internship programs offered by the university.
