Master of Arts in Anthropology
Master of Applied Anthropology
The department recommends prospective students contacting the graduate advisor and/or graduate faculty in a formal letter of inquiry before submitting application materials. Your letter should contain information on why our graduate program interests you and why your skills and experience would be an asset to our graduate program.
Please note that all application materials, including GRE scores, are due prior to February 15 in order to be given highest priority for merit-based financial assistance. Applicants will be admitted once a year for fall semester entry. Those seeking to begin in the fall without funding must submit applications by May 1. Failure to meet that deadline will disqualify applicants from consideration for graduate assistance funds. Late applications will still be considered for admission into the masters program. June 30 is the last day for graduate applicants for fall semester to have all admission materials received by the Graduate Admissions office.
There are two components to the application to the masters programs in the Department of Anthropology at Boise State University.
1. One set of materials goes to Graduate Admissions Office:
a) The online application form (Students should consult the Graduate College for general admission information):
b) The appropriate admission fee
c) Official transcripts from every college or university that you have attended (minimum GPA of 3.0 is required)
d) Your GRE general test scores
Mail to:
Boise State University Graduate College
1910 University Drive
Boise State University
Boise, ID 83725-1110
Phone: 1-800-824-7017
Fax: 1-208-426-2789
When your file is complete in the Graduate Admissions office, it is sent to the Anthropology Department along with copies of your transcripts and your test scores.
2. The second set of materials goes to the Anthropology Department:
a) Two-page (500-word) essay: In this essay, you should discuss your professional goals and explain why you think Boise State’s graduate program can serve your needs, which field(s) you would like to study, and which degree program you wish to enroll in.
b) Two letters of recommendation
Mail to:
Graduate Program Coordinator
Department of Anthropology
1910 University Drive
Boise State University
Boise, ID 83725-1950
Once all of these materials are received by the Anthropology Department, including the Program Admission Recommendation form and attachments from Graduate Admissions, the department’s graduate program coordinator will circulate your file to the department’s graduate program committee. The graduate program committee will examine your file and then recommend to the Graduate Dean to admit with regular status, to admit with provisional status, or to deny admission.
The Graduate Dean will make the final decision and notify you by mail. An admission decision can be made in the absence of GRE scores, but the decision can only be to admit provisionally or deny admission. If you are admitted with provisional status without GRE scores, you will be required to submit GRE scores before the end of the first semester following your admission.
