Short-term (1-3 month) research in libraries, universities, or archives in the Federal
Republic of Germany
Grants are awarded for specific research
projects and cannot be used for travel only, attendance at conferences
or conventions, editorial meetings, lecture tours or extended
guest-professorships.
Eligibility Requirements
Scholars who hold the PhD (or equivalent) and have been engaged in
research or teaching full time at a United States or Canadian university
or research institution for at least two years after receipt of the
doctorate are eligible.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
or Canada. Permanent residents must have been affiliated with a United
States or Canadian institution in full-time employment for at least five
consecutive years, German nationals for at least ten years.
Applicants must have a well-defined research project that makes a stay
in the Federal Republic of Germany essential. Applicants should possess
adequate knowledge of the German language to carry out the proposed
research. This requirement is not obligatory for applicants in the
natural or engineering sciences.
Applicants may not hold a DAAD grant and a grant from another German
or German-American organization consecutively or concurrently for the
same project.
Former recipients of DAAD research grants who wish to apply again may
do so after a lapse of at least three years.
Terms of Award
Grants are awarded for one to three months during the calendar year
following the November 1 deadline.
Monthly stipends are between DM 3200 and DM 3500, the rate to be
determined by DAAD. Additional support for family members is not
available.
An additional amount of up to DM 300 for travel within Germany may
be awarded.
