Faculty Research Grants
Application and Instructions
SSPA Faculty Research Grants are divided into three categories: (1) funds to support research ($10,000); (2) funds to support professional travel ($8000); and (3) funds to support released time ($5000). These funds are intended to supplement research and professional travel and are available in addition to university programs such as the Faculty Research Grants and Faculty Research Associates.
Funds to Support Research
The Dean's Office is making $10,000 available for faculty research (defined as all types of peer-reviewed scholarship) projects. The purpose of this grant is to provide additional financial support for SSPA faculty research. Funding can be used for any research related project, including, but not limited to: data collection, student assistance, travel expenses (not including professional travel to present research findings at conferences), materials, supplies, and equipment[1] related to the project. These funds cannot be used for faculty compensation. The maximum award will be $2000 for proposals that can lead to externally funded research and $1000 to support other forms of peer-reviewed scholarship. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members, who will make recommendations to the Dean. Applications must be submitted to the Dean's Office by 4:00 p.m., by the second Monday in September for allocations between October 1 and March 31. Applications for the period of April 1, through September 30, are due by 4:00 p.m. by the first Friday in March.[2]
Highest priority in granting funds will be given to proposals that support or potentially lead to externally funded research.
Higher priority will be given to proposals:
Ø that fund research that is either about to begin or currently active (e.g., collection of data). Lower priority will be given to proposals that are seeking reimbursement for completed projects.
Ø that have potential for the research to lead to publication in refereed journals or other peer-reviewed materials. The committee will also give special consideration to research that might not be easily funded from other sources.
Ø from faculty who have not received SSPA research grants in the previous two years.
Ø from tenure-track faculty.
The application must include the following:
1. Name, department, email, rank, and title of your research proposal.
2. A brief (one page) description of research proposal including a description of the methodology and anticipated benefits.
3. Other funding applied for and/or received
to support this proposed project.
4. Are
you currently under consideration for funding from the Teaching Grant
Committee?
5. Amount of funds requested and amount(s) of previous awards from the College.
6. An itemized budget indicating how the requested funds would be spent.
7. An abbreviated (one page) research vita.
8. Statement of support and signature from the department chair.
Funds to Support Professional Travel
The faculty committee will also make recommendations to the
Dean for supporting faculty travel to professional conferences. The total
amount available is $8000 for FY2007, $5000 for FY2008, $2000 for FY2009, and
will be eliminated by FY2010. The maximum award is $500. Faculty must be active
participants at the conference (i.e., listed on the conference program as
presenting a paper or a poster session) and must have matching funds from their
home department. Priority will be given to tenure-track faculty.
Applications for this category must include:
1. Name, department, email, rank, and title
of your professional conference presentation.
2. Documentation regarding program participation.
3. Other funding applied for and/or received
to support professional travel.
4. Amount of funds requested and amount(s) of previous awards from
the College.
5. An abbreviated (one page) research vita.
6. Statement of support and signature from the department chair.
Funds to Support Released Time
In order to provide released time to complete and submit externally funded
grant proposals or significant research projects, the Dean’s office is
providing $5000 to provide up to one three-credit course reassignment for two
full-time faculty each academic year. The funds can only be used to hire
adjunct faculty. Priority will be given to tenure-track faculty.
The application must include the following:
1. Name, department, email, rank, and title of your research proposal.
3. A brief (one page) description of research proposal including a description of the methodology and anticipated benefits.
3. Other funding applied for and/or received
to support this proposed project.
4. Amount of funds requested, amount(s) of previous awards from the
College, and previous released time.
5. An abbreviated (one page) research vita that lists previous grant activity (funded and unfunded).
7. Statement of support and signature from the department chair.
8. A copy of the completed project must be submitted to the Dean’s Office in order to be considered for subsequent funding.
Submit one original and three (3) copies of the each application to: Office of the Dean, E-717, MS 1900
